An East Yorkshire brewery is celebrating its 15th birthday by being named ‘Britain’s best’ at a national award.

Wold Top Brewery – based in Wold Newton near Driffield – saw their Wold Gold beer scoop double success, as it was awarded ‘Best in Show’ as well as receiving a silver award.

The business – which started back in 2003 and is this year marking its 15th birthday with a special beer in June – said the beer first crafted in 2004 had “withstood the test of time.”

Alex Balchin, Wold Top's brewery manager, said: "We're delighted that a beer that was first brewed 14 years ago has withstood the test of time to win two awards at this new global beer competition."

Beers were judged on three criteria – quality, value and packaging.

They then received a score out of 100. Beers that scored 90 and above were awarded a gold medal, with silvers going to those scored between 76 and 89.

Wold Gold – a continental-style blonde beer – came away with a silver medal.

Wold Top Brewery’s roots lie at Hunmanby Grange in Wold Newton, when farmers Tom and Gill Mellor turned their hand to beer.

Today, Wold Top’s portfolio spans more than 20 types of beer, and in June a special edition is to be released to mark the company’s birthday.

Jason Lukehurst, office manager, said: “We always knew our beer was good, that is for sure, but it is always nice to get recognition for what we do.

“We worked out we are basically the best in Britain. The awards are brilliant, and it is proof to our customers that we are still producing quality beer.

“We have a range of new seasonal beers coming up, and in June the 15th-anniversary one will be coming out.”

Wold Gold is brewed using Yorkshire Wolds grown barley, wheat, and Cara malt hopped with Goldings and Styrian hops that impart a fruity flavour with a hint of spice.

It is available from independent retailers and selected multiple retailers nationwide.

The awards in London – which see beers across the country battle it out for honors – were judged by a host of industry professionals.

Sid Patel, CEO of event organizer Beverage Trade Network, said: "At all the other major competitions, beers are judged solely on the quality of what's in the bottle.

“We wanted to take a different approach, by asking our judges to look at beers the way beer drinkers do, adding appearance and value for money into the mix."

The London Beer Competition is organized by the Beverage Trade Network, the US drinks events, services, business, and publishing group dedicated to helping drinks producers and brand owners get closer to the buyers, distributors, and retailers that can bring their products to market.
